Artist statement:
Named after Ivan Southall’s book which includes the story of the Sunderland SQN 461, my body of work encapsulates 5 oil paintings of World War II fighter planes. I aim to truly capture light in its purest form, and in doing so I attempt to create a sense of realism, with each painting having a painterly quality when looked at up close, but forming a cohesive image when all works are looked at from afar. The work took well over 200 hours to complete for my Australian HSC Major work. Along with light, I aim to capture and communicate perspective and depth in the landscape, and through this to convey motion and the humbling stance of each piece of airborne metal. In honour of my great grandfather, Egbert Campbell Smith of Sunderland squadron SQN 461. Influences; Turner, Robert Taylor, Mark Postlethwaite |
